Sustainability Mission

Art, architecture, and design are inseparable from the ecological systems that shape our world. The Museum of Modern Art is committed to presenting thought-provoking modern and contemporary art while engaging audiences with the ideas, environmental challenges, and potential solutions shaping our time.

As changes to the climate transform societies in profound and unpredictable ways, we embrace our role as a thought leader to foster new narratives that inspire hope, resilience, innovation, and empathy while raising awareness of how collective choices affect the planet. Through our operations, exhibitions, and programs, we illuminate the impact of collective choices on the environment.

Since 2008, our sustainability efforts have grown from staff-driven initiatives into such institution-wide actions as qualifying for LEED Platinum certification in 2019 and achieving significant reductions in emissions and waste. Today, we continue to advance our operations, exhibitions, and public programs while working toward zero waste and deeper community engagement.
